Legislative Activities
Here you will find information about the legislative process, introduced legislation and how to go about seeking changes in policies and law. We encourage you to explore this section and join us in the process whether it be simply sending a letter to your legislator or accompanying us during our lobbying trips.
Much legislation is brought about by two primary sources: litigation and public pressure. Although our efforts at litigation are well-established we all need to actively be involved in public awareness issues. In this section you will find links to your legislators, current bills and resolutions, proposed legislation we support and techniques to effectively lobby in support of our issues.
If you are not familiar with Your Legislators then take an opportunity to meet them. Most legislators, especially during election times, get out to meet and greet events in the community. These are great opportunities to just be seen or to introduce yourself. There are also the regularly scheduled public meetings of legislative bodies as well as issue specific meetings seeking public input. Networking with other people at these events is important as this is where you will find other people who are passionate about causes.
Watch for news articles about children’s rights issues and write letters to the editor. Also pass both along to your legislator. It is important that this issue be kept in front of their faces on a daily basis. Not by a single individual or organization but by the multitude of community members who maintain contact on a periodic basis.
Please check to see what Introduced Legislation is currently pending before your legislative bodies and express your support for those we recommend. It is also important that Legislative Proposals be brought to the attention of your representative. If you have created a relationship with your legislator and have found him or her to be supportive of the issue of children’s rights then seek to meet your legislator to present the proposed legislation and discuss the need for it. You will need to have Statistics and Supporting Documentation for your position.
